Nicholas Wright

We know very little about the earliest WRIGHT ancestor within the mixed blood community. It is known from the Lewes Cool Springs Presbyterian Church records that on November 21, 1799, Nicholas Wright and Mary, "free mulattos", were married. Based on this, Nicholas was probably born sometime before 1780.

Nicholas appears in the 1800 DE census records living in Dagsborough Hundred, Sussex Co. as the head of a household with 3 other "free colored" people. By 1810 the census shows him in a household of 6. Also appearing in the 1810 census records were Daniel Wright and Sarah Wright but I do not know the connection between these three families.

There were also mixed race Wrights living in Kent County, DE and in nearby Maryland who may have been related to Nicholas. The 1800 Kent County DE census shows:

Nothing more is known about these two so far, but, based on information supplied by Stacey Emeharole, it possible that Nicholas and Mary had the following children:

  1. Warren Wright (b.c. 1803) married Maria Sockum (b. 1808)
  2. Warner Wright (twin of Frederick, b.c. 1810 ??) married to Elizabeth (b. 1815)
  3. Frederick Wright (twin of Warner, b.c. 1810 ??) married to Silena (b. 1825) lived in Milford Neck DE.

Other possible children/grandchildren include:

  1. Walter Wright (born between 1816-1830)
  2. Nicholas Wright (born between 1816-1830)
  3. Elisha Wright (b.c. 1807)
